Forklift Driver

N.S.W. Forklift Licence Assessment Process “in a nutshell”

Familiarise yourself with the assessment instrument.

There are two parts to the assessment.

1. Theory assessment
2. Practical driving assessment

Theory - Study the theory part of the assessment instrument.

There is a pool of 97 questions in the theory assessment to study

52 questions have been selected by the assessor.

Included in the 52 questions are 30 critical questions (marked with a star) which must be answered 100% correctly.

You will be allowed 90 minutes to answer the 52 questions in the theory assessment.

The theory assessment is a “closed book” type of assessment which can be completed written or orally. It is not a multiple-choice assessment.

The theory assessment must be completed in English.

Practical - Practice the practical operation of a forklift. You must maintain a training logbook to be able to operate a forklift whilst training.

You must be supervised by a licensed forklift operator or a competent person at all times whilst training.

This person must sign your logbook on a daily basis indicating details required in the logbook.

At the time of assessment you must;

  • Produce your properly maintained logbook to the assessor
  • Prove your identity to the assessor by providing a combination of the following documents in Attachment A (See over).

If you pass both parts of the assessment you will be issued on-the-spot with a “Notice of Satisfactory Assessment” which is an interim license, valid for 60 days. You should receive in the mail, at your home address, your Workcover issued license within this 60-day period.

If you don’t pass either or both parts of the assessment you will be advised to book a re-assessment after the mandatory 21-day “cooling-off’ period. You are prohibited from being re-assessed during this 21-day period. At the time of re-assessment, you will need to produce all original paperwork and identification to the assessor. If you passed one part of the assessment, that pass result is valid for six months, after this period you will need to complete both parts of the assessment again.
